Juan Carlos Urizar, MD
Dr. Urizar was born and raised in Guatemala, where he obtained his medical degree from Francisco Marroquin University Medical School. He immigrated to the United States in 1998 and completed three years of psychiatry residency training at The Institute of Living/University of Connecticut. He then transferred to the Harvard Longwood Program at Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where he served as a chief resident.
Following his residency, he pursued a fellowship in Behavioral Neurology, Neuropsychiatry, and Psychosomatic Medicine. After graduating from the fellowship, he began working as an associate psychiatrist and instructor for Neuropsychiatry and Primary Care clinics at Brigham & Women's Hospital. He held a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School until 2011 when he relocated to San Antonio, Texas, to establish his private practice.
In addition to his interest in neuroscience, Dr. Urizar is passionate about medical anthropology, health promotion and education, and social justice. He holds certifications in General Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as in Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry from the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties.
In 2018, Dr. Urizar returned to Boston, where he currently serves as the director of Geriatric Psychiatry at Brigham & Women's Hospital and holds a faculty position at Harvard Medical School.
