Fidelia Gonzalez Barreno - Midwife

Doña Fidelia González Barreno was born on May 5, 1964, in Tecpán, Guatemala. As the eldest of eleven siblings, she has always embraced responsibility and care. With 27 years of experience as a midwife, Doña Fidelia is deeply passionate about ensuring the well-being of pregnant women from the beginning of pregnancy through the postpartum period.

Throughout her career, Doña Fidelia has been dedicated to supporting mothers, sharing her extensive knowledge of natural medicines, and assisting in the births of approximately 145 children. Her responsibilities as a midwife include guiding mothers from the early months of pregnancy, advising them on health practices, and providing holistic care.

Currently, Doña Fidelia is a valued member of the Phalarope Technical Advisory Board. In this role, she contributes to training other midwives to become more effective maternal and child health agents. Her efforts aim to integrate midwives as part of mobile maternal and child health teams across the country.

Through the Phalarope program, Doña Fidelia has received comprehensive training in crucial aspects of maternal care. She is skilled in conducting complete medical histories and exams, using basic medical equipment to detect symptoms of hypertension and gestational diabetes, and evaluating fetal monitoring. Additionally, she understands proper referral systems to ensure patients receive timely medical attention, thus preventing complications. Her training also includes general health education, enabling her to educate both her patients and the broader community.

Doña Fidelia's ongoing development, eagerness to learn, and leadership within the Phalarope Technical Advisory Board underscore her vital role in enhancing maternal and child health in Guatemala. Her dedication and passion continue to inspire and make a significant impact in her community.
